  • There are two kexec load syscalls, kexec_load another and kexec_file_load.
kexec_file_load has been splited as kernel/kexec_file.c. In this patch I
split kexec_load syscall code to kernel/kexec.c.

And add a new kconfig option KEXEC_CORE, so we can disable kexec_load and
use kexec_file_load only, or vice verse.

The original requirement is from Ted Ts'o, he want kexec kernel signature
being checked with CONFIG_KEXEC_VERIFY_SIG enabled. But kexec-tools use
kexec_load syscall can bypass the checking.

Vivek Goyal proposed to create a common kconfig option so user can compile
in only one syscall for loading kexec kernel. KEXEC/KEXEC_FILE selects
KEXEC_CORE so that old config files still work.

Because there's general code need CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE, so I updated all the
architecture Kconfig with a new option KEXEC_CORE, and let KEXEC selects
KEXEC_CORE in arch Kconfig. Also updated general kernel code with to
    kexec_load syscall.

  • All the ia64 pvops code is now dead code since both
xen and kvm support have been ripped out [0] [1]. Just
that no one had troubled to rip this stuff out. The only
useful remaining pieces were the old pvops docs but that
was recently also generalized and moved out from ia64 [2].

This has been run time tested on an ia64 Madison system.

  • Pull initial ACPI support for arm64 from Will Deacon:
"This series introduces preliminary ACPI 5.1 support to the arm64
kernel using the "hardware reduced" profile. We don't support any
peripherals yet, so it's fairly limited in scope:

    - MEMORY init (UEFI)

    - ACPI discovery (RSDP via UEFI)

    - CPU init (FADT)

    - GIC init (MADT)

    - SMP boot (MADT + PSCI)

    - ACPI Kconfig options (dependent on EXPERT)

ACPI for arm64 has been in development for a while now and hardware
has been available that can boot with either FDT or ACPI tables. This
has been made possible by both changes to the ACPI spec to cater for
ARM-based machines (known as "hardware-reduced" in ACPI parlance) but
also a Linaro-driven effort to get this supported on top of the Linux
kernel. This pull request is the result of that work.

These changes allow us to initialise the CPUs, interrupt controller,
and timers via ACPI tables, with memory information and cmdline coming
from EFI. We don't support a hybrid ACPI/FDT scheme. Of course,
there is still plenty of work to do (a serial console would be nice!)
but I expect that to happen on a per-driver basis after this core
    series has been merged.

Anyway, the diff stat here is fairly horrible, but splitting this up
and merging it via all the different subsystems would have been
extremely painful. Instead, we've got all the relevant Acks in place
and I've not seen anything other than trivial (Kconfig) conflicts in
-next (for completeness, I've included my resolution below). Nearly
half of the insertions fall under Documentation/.

So, we'll see how this goes. Right now, it all depends on EXPERT and
I fully expect people to use FDT by default for the immediate future"

  • We would want to use number of page table level to define mm_struct.
    Let's expose it as CONFIG_PGTABLE_LEVELS.

  • ACPI 5.1 does not currently support S states for ARM64 hardware but
ACPI code will call acpi_target_system_state() and acpi_sleep_init()
for device power management, so introduce
CONFIG_ACPI_SYSTEM_POWER_STATES_SUPPORT and select it for x86 and
ia64 only to make sleep functions available, and also introduce stub
function to allow other drivers to function until S states are defined
    for ARM64.

It will be no functional change for x86 and IA64.

  • Pull more ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"These are regression fixes (leds-gpio, ACPI backlight driver,
operating performance points library, ACPI device enumeration
messages, cpupower tool), other bug fixes (ACPI EC driver, ACPI device
PM), some cleanups in the operating performance points (OPP)
framework, continuation of CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME elimination, a couple of
minor intel_pstate driver changes, a new MAINTAINERS entry for it and
an ACPI fan driver change needed for better support of thermal
    management in user space.

    Specifics:

    - Fix a regression in leds-gpio introduced by a recent commit that
inadvertently changed the name of one of the properties used by the
    driver (Fabio Estevam).

    - Fix a regression in the ACPI backlight driver introduced by a
recent fix that missed one special case that had to be taken into
    account (Aaron Lu).

    - Drop the level of some new kernel messages from the ACPI core
introduced by a recent commit to KERN_DEBUG which they should have
used from the start and drop some other unuseful KERN_ERR messages
printed by ACPI (Rafael J Wysocki).

    - Revert an incorrect commit modifying the cpupower tool (Prarit
    Bhargava).

    - Fix two regressions introduced by recent commits in the OPP library
and clean up some existing minor issues in that code (Viresh
    Kumar).

    - Continue to replace CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME with CONFIG_PM throughout the
tree (or drop it where that can be done) in order to make it
possible to eliminate CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME (Rafael J Wysocki, Ulf
    Hansson, Ludovic Desroches).

There will be one more "CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME removal" batch after this
one, because some new uses of it have been introduced during the
current merge window, but that should be sufficient to finally get
    rid of it.

    - Make the ACPI EC driver more robust against race conditions related
to GPE handler installation failures (Lv Zheng).

    - Prevent the ACPI device PM core code from attempting to disable
GPEs that it has not enabled which confuses ACPICA and makes it
report errors unnecessarily (Rafael J Wysocki).

    - Add a "force" command line switch to the intel_pstate driver to
make it possible to override the blacklisting of some systems in
that driver if needed (Ethan Zhao).

    - Improve intel_pstate code documentation and add a MAINTAINERS entry
    for it (Kristen Carlson Accardi).

    - Make the ACPI fan driver create cooling device interfaces witn
names that reflect the IDs of the ACPI device objects they are
associated with, except for "generic" ACPI fans (PNP ID "PNP0C0B").

That's necessary for user space thermal management tools to be able
to connect the fans with the parts of the system they are supposed
to be cooling properly. From Srinivas Pandruvada"

  • It is not valid to select CONFIG_PM directly without selecting

  • Load purgatory code in RAM and relocate it based on the location.
Relocation code has been inspired by module relocation code and purgatory
    relocation code in kexec-tools.

Also compute the checksums of loaded kexec segments and store them in
    purgatory.

Arch independent code provides this functionality so that arch dependent
bootloaders can make use of it.

Helper functions are provided to get/set symbol values in purgatory which
are used by bootloaders later to set things like stack and entry point of

  • Pull ARM SoC platform changes from Olof Johansson:
"This branch contains mostly additions and changes to platform
enablement and SoC-level drivers. Since there's sometimes a
dependency on device-tree changes, there's also a fair amount of
    those in this branch.

    Pieces worth mentioning are:

    - Mbus driver for Marvell platforms, allowing kernel configuration
and resource allocation of on-chip peripherals.
    - Enablement of the mbus infrastructure from Marvell PCI-e drivers.
    - Preparation of MSI support for Marvell platforms.
    - Addition of new PCI-e host controller driver for Tegra platforms
    - Some churn caused by sharing of macro names between i.MX 6Q and 6DL
platforms in the device tree sources and header files.
    - Various suspend/PM updates for Tegra, including LP1 support.
    - Versatile Express support for MCPM, part of big little support.
    - Allwinner platform support for A20 and A31 SoCs (dual and quad
    Cortex-A7)
    - OMAP2+ support for DRA7, a new Cortex-A15-based SoC.

The code that touches other architectures are patches moving MSI
arch-specific functions over to weak symbols and removal of
    ARCH_SUPPORTS_MSI, acked by PCI maintainers"

  • Now that we have weak versions for each of the PCI MSI architecture
functions, we can actually build the MSI support for all platforms,
regardless of whether they provide or not architecture-specific
versions of those functions. For this reason, the ARCH_SUPPORTS_MSI
hidden kconfig boolean becomes useless, and this patch gets rid of it.

  • Pull x86/efi changes from Peter Anvin:
"The bulk of these changes are cleaning up the efivars handling and
breaking it up into a tree of files. There are a number of fixes as
    well.

The entire changeset is pretty big, but most of it is code movement.

Several of these commits are quite new; the history got very messed up
due to a mismerge with the urgent changes for rc8 which completely
broke IA64, and so Ingo requested that we rebase it to straighten it
    out."

  • Commit d3f138106b ("iommu: Rename the DMAR and INTR_REMAP config
options") changed all references to DMAR in Kconfig files to INTEL_IOMMU
(and, likewise, changed the references to CONFIG_DMAR everywhere else
to CONFIG_INTEL_IOMMU). That commit missed one "select DMAR" statement
in ia64's Kconfig file. Change that one too.

  • In commit 887cbce0adea ("arch Kconfig: centralise ARCH_NO_VIRT_TO_BUS")
I introduced the config sybmol HAVE_VIRT_TO_BUS and selected that where
needed. I am not sure what I was thinking. Instead, just directly
select VIRT_TO_BUS where it is needed.
