On modules with no executable code, LLVM generates a __cfi_check stub,
but won't align it to page size as expected. This change ensures the
function is at the beginning of the .text section and correctly aligned
for the CFI shadow.Also discard the .eh_frame section, which LLD may emit with CFI_CLANG.

Modules with a large number of compilation units may be
exceeding AR and LD command argument list. Handle this gracefully by
writing the long argument list in a file. The command line options
read from file are inserted in place of the original @file option.The usage is well documented at

Modules with a large number of compilation units can exceed execv
argument list resulting in E2BIG (Argument list too long) error.Fix this by replacing shell 'echo > file' into a more native

Commit 436e980e2ed5 ("kbuild: don't hardcode depmod path") stopped
hard-coding the path of depmod, but in the process caused trouble for
distributions that had that /sbin location, but didn't have it in the
PATH (generally because /sbin is limited to the super-user path).Work around it for now by just adding /sbin to the end of PATH in the

$(error-if,...) is expanded to an empty string. Currently, it relies on
eval_clause() returning xstrdup("") when all attempts for expansion fail,

There is an unescaped left brace in a regex in OPEN_BRACE check. This
throws a runtime error when checkpatch is run with --fix flag and the
OPEN_BRACE check is executed.Fix it by escaping the left brace.

However, it caused a regression on this prototype:

This is only noticed after adding a patch that checks if the

With LTO, LLVM bitcode won't be compiled into native code until
modpost_link, or modfinal for modules. This change postpones calls
to objtool until after these steps, and moves objtool_args to
Makefile.lib, so the arguments can be reused in Makefile.modfinal.As we didn't have objects to process earlier, we use --duplicate
when processing vmlinux.o. This change also disables unreachable
instruction warnings with LTO to avoid warnings about the int3

This change adds a --noinstr flag to objtool to allow us to specify
that we're processing vmlinux.o without also enabling noinstr
validation. This is needed to avoid false positives with LTO when we

With CONFIG_LTO_CLANG, clang generates LLVM IR instead of ELF object
files. As empty.o is used for probing target properties, disable LTO

With LTO, everything is compiled into LLVM bitcode, so we have to link
each module into native code before modpost. Kbuild uses the .lto.o
suffix for these files, which also ends up in module information. This
change strips the unnecessary .lto suffix from the module name.Bug: 145210207

With LTO, the compiler doesn't necessarily obey the link order for
initcalls, and initcall variables need globally unique names to avoid
collisions at link time.This change exports __KBUILD_MODNAME and adds the initcall_id() macro,
which uses it together with __COUNTER__ and __LINE__ to help ensure
these variables have unique names, and moves each variable to its own
section when LTO is enabled, so the correct order can be specified using
a linker script.The generate_initcall_ordering.pl script uses nm to find initcalls from
the object files passed to the linker, and generates a linker script
that specifies the same order for initcalls that we would have without
LTO. With LTO enabled, the script is called in link-vmlinux.sh through
jobserver-exec to limit the number of jobs spawned.Bug: 145210207

With CONFIG_LTO_CLANG, LLVM bitcode has not yet been compiled into a
binary when the .mod files are generated, which means they don't yet
contain references to certain symbols that will be present in the final
binaries. This includes intrinsic functions, such as memcpy, memmove,
and memset [1], and stack protector symbols [2]. This change adds a
default symbol list to use with CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS when Clang's

With CONFIG_MODVERSIONS, version information is linked into each
compilation unit that exports symbols. With LTO, we cannot use this
method as all C code is compiled into LLVM bitcode instead. This
change collects symbol versions into .symversions files and merges
them in link-vmlinux.sh where they are all linked into vmlinux.o at

This change adds build system support for Clang's Link Time
Optimization (LTO). With -flto, instead of ELF object files, Clang
produces LLVM bitcode, which is compiled into native code at link
time, allowing the final binary to be optimized globally. For more

The Kconfig option CONFIG_LTO_CLANG is implemented as a choice,
which defaults to LTO being disabled. To use LTO, the architecture
must select ARCH_SUPPORTS_LTO_CLANG and support:- compiling with Clang,
- compiling all assembly code with Clang's integrated assembler,
- and linking with LLD.While using CONFIG_LTO_CLANG_FULL results in the best runtime
performance, the compilation is not scalable in time or
memory. CONFIG_LTO_CLANG_THIN enables ThinLTO, which allows
parallel optimization and faster incremental builds. ThinLTO is
used by default if the architecture also selects

To enable LTO, LLVM tools must be used to handle bitcode files, by

get_maintainer_nxp.sh is a wrapper of in-kernel get_maintainter.pl
which aims to help the team member to easily get the maintainer
for patch review process. And the script uses its own maintainer
file MAITAINERS.NXP.This script is moved from LF auto script.

Currently CONFIG_GCC_PLUGINS is auto enabled by detecting host
build environment as follows:
"depends on $(success,$(srctree)/scripts/gcc-plugin.sh $(CC))"This potentially cause an inconsistency issue of images built
from two machines e.g. kernel modules built by ourselves
maybe unable to load with a prebuilt kernel image and vice versa.
(Affected by STACKPROTECTOR_PER_TASK which is also default y and
depends on GCC_PLUGINS)In order to address this image inconsistency issue, we make the
GCC_PLUGINS option not default to y and reply on users to select it
from defconfig file once their host environment can meet the requirement
and want this option enabled.This issue happened with GCC 10.2 toolchain and have gcc-10-plugin-dev

"xargs echo" is not a safe way to remove line breaks because the input
may exceed the command line limit and xargs may break it up into
multiple invocations of echo. This should never happen because
scripts/gen_autoksyms.sh expects all undefined symbols are placed in
the second line of .mod files.One possible way is to replace "xargs echo" with
"sed ':x;N;$!bx;s/\n/ /g'" or something, but I rewrote the code by
using awk because it is more readable.This issue was reported by Sami Tolvanen; in his Clang LTO patch set,
$(multi-used-m) is no longer an ELF object, but a thin archive that
contains LLVM bitcode files. llvm-nm prints out symbols for each
archive member separately, which results a lot of dupications, in some
places, beyond the system-defined limit.This problem must be fixed irrespective of LTO, and we must ensure

When merging configuration fragments, it might be of interest to
identify mismatches (redefinitions) programmatically. Hence add the
option -s (strict mode) to instruct merge_config.sh to bail out in
case any redefinition has been detected.With strict mode, warnings are emitted as before, but the script
terminates with rc=1. If -y is set to define "builtin having
precedence over modules", fragments are still allowed to set =m (while
the base config has =y). Strict mode will tolerate that as demotions
from =y to =m are ignored when setting -y.Bug: 174454795
