The commit 8e99b6d4533c changed prefixcmp() to strstart() but missed to
change the return value in some place. It makes perf help print
annoying output even for sane config items like below:$ perf help
'.root': unsupported man viewer sub key.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if

Replacing prefixcmp(), same purpose, inverted result, so standardize on
the kernel variant, to reduce silly differences among tools/ and the
kernel sources, making it easier for people to work in both codebases.And then doing:
if (strstarts(option, "no-"))
Looks clearer than doing:

To figure out if option starts witn "no-".

Previously these were being ignored, sometimes silently.
Stop doing that, emitting debug messages and handling the errors.

Its similar to doing grep on a /proc/kallsyms, but it also shows extra
information like the path to the kernel module and the unrelocated
addresses in it, to help in diagnosing problems.It is also helps demonstrate the use of the symbols routines so that
tool writers can use them more effectively.Using it:

The tools so far have been using the strerror_r() GNU variant, that
returns a string, be it the buffer passed or something else.But that, besides being tricky in cases where we expect that the
function using strerror_r() returns the error formatted in a provided
buffer (we have to check if it returned something else and copy that
instead), breaks the build on systems not using glibc, like Alpine
Linux, where musl libc is used.So, introduce yet another wrapper, str_error_r(), that has the GNU
interface, but uses the portable XSI variant of strerror_r(), so that
users rest asured that the provided buffer is used and it is what is

Before this patch each subcommand calls perf_config() by themself,
reading the default configuration together with subcommand specific
options. If a subcommand doesn't have it own options, it needs to call
'perf_config(perf_default_config, NULL)' to ensure .perfconfig is
loaded.This patch brings perf_config(perf_default_config, NULL) to the very
start of main(), so subcommands don't need to do it.After this patch, 'llvm.clang-path' works for 'perf trace'.

The bash completion does not support listing subsubcommands for 'perf

It seems that commit cc5848213329 ("perf help: Remove use of die and
handle errors") caused the problem - it changed the initial value of
'help_format' from HELP_FORMAT_MAN to HELP_FORMAT_NONE.This broke the --help option for all builtins, that would produce no

perf defines both __used and __unused variables to use for marking
unused variables. The variable __used is defined to
__attribute__((__unused__)), which contradicts the kernel definition to
__attribute__((__used__)) for new gcc versions. On Android, __used is
also defined in system headers and this leads to warnings like: warning:
'__used__' attribute ignored__unused is not defined in the kernel and is not a standard definition.
If __unused is included everywhere instead of __used, this leads to
conflicts with glibc headers, since glibc has a variables with this name
in its headers.The best approach is to use __maybe_unused, the definition used in the
kernel for __attribute__((unused)). In this way there is only one
definition in perf sources (instead of 2 definitions that point to the
same thing: __used and __unused) and it works on both Linux and Android.
This patch simply replaces all instances of __used and __unused with

tools is to set something that has an enum type, that is builtin

Parsing an option from the command line with OPT_BOOLEAN on a
bool data type would not work on a big-endian machine due to the
manner in which the boolean was being cast into an int and
incremented. For example, running 'perf probe --list' on a
PowerPC machine would fail to properly set the list_events bool
and would therefore print out the usage information and
terminate.This patch makes OPT_BOOLEAN work as expected with a bool
datatype. For cases where the original OPT_BOOLEAN was
intentionally being used to increment an int each time it was
passed in on the command line, this patch introduces OPT_INCR
with the old behaviour of OPT_BOOLEAN (the verbose variable is
currently the only such example of this).I have reviewed every use of OPT_BOOLEAN to verify that a true
C99 bool was passed. Where integers were used, I verified that
they were only being used for boolean logic and changed them to
bools to ensure that they would not be mistakenly used as ints.
The major exception was the verbose variable which now uses

Related to a shadowed variable bug fix Valdis Kletnieks noticed
that perf does not get built with -Wshadow, which could have
helped us avoid the bug.So enable -Wshadow and also enable the following warnings on
perf builds, in addition to the already enabled -Wall -Wextra

The list of warnings enablement is rather arbitrary: it's based
on my (quick) reading of the GCC manpages and trying them on
perf.I categorized the warnings based on individually enabling them
and looking whether they trigger something in the perf build.
If i liked those warnings (i.e. if they trigger for something
that arguably could be improved) i enabled the warning.If the warnings seemed to come from language laywers spamming
the build with tons of nuisance warnings i generally kept them
off. Most of the sign conversion related warnings were in
this category. (A second patch enabling some of the sign
warnings might be welcome - sign bugs can be nasty.)I also kept warnings that seem to make sense from their manpage
description and which produced no actual warnings on our code
base. These warnings might still be turned off if they end up
being a nuisance.I also left out a few warnings that are not supported in older
compilers.[ Note that these changes might break the build on older
compilers i did not test, or on non-x86 architectures that

Enable -Wextra. This found a few real bugs plus a number
of signed/unsigned type mismatches/uncleanlinesses. It
also required a few annotationsAll things considered it was still worth it so lets try with
