  • Logfs was introduced to the kernel in 2009, and hasn't seen any non
drive-by changes since 2012, while having lots of unsolved issues
including the complete lack of error handling, with more and more
issues popping up without any fixes.

The logfs.org domain has been bouncing from a mail, and the maintainer
on the non-logfs.org domain hasn't repsonded to past queries either.

  • Pull new F2FS filesystem from Jaegeuk Kim:
"Introduce a new file system, Flash-Friendly File System (F2FS), to
    Linux 3.8.

    Highlights:
    - Add initial f2fs source codes
    - Fix an endian conversion bug
    - Fix build failures on random configs
    - Fix the power-off-recovery routine
    - Minor cleanup, coding style, and typos patches"

    From the Kconfig help text:

F2FS is based on Log-structured File System (LFS), which supports
versatile "flash-friendly" features. The design has been focused on
addressing the fundamental issues in LFS, which are snowball effect
of wandering tree and high cleaning overhead.

Since flash-based storages show different characteristics according to
the internal geometry or flash memory management schemes aka FTL, F2FS
and tools support various parameters not only for configuring on-disk
layout, but also for selecting allocation and cleaning algorithms.

and there's an article by Neil Brown about it on lwn.net:

  • smbfs has been scheduled for removal in 2.6.27, so
maybe we can now move it to drivers/staging on the
    way out.

smbfs still uses the big kernel lock and nobody
is going to fix that, so we should be getting
    rid of it soon.

This removes the 32 bit compat mount and ioctl
handling code, which is implemented in common fs
code, and moves all smbfs related files into
    drivers/staging/smbfs.

  • While cacheing is generally frowned upon in the 9p world, it has its
place -- particularly in situations where the remote file system is
exclusive and/or read-only. The vacfs views of venti content addressable
store are a real-world instance of such a situation. To facilitate higher
performance for these workloads (and eventually use the fscache patches),
we have enabled a "loose" cache mode which does not attempt to maintain
any form of consistency on the page-cache or dcache. This results in over
two orders of magnitude performance improvement for cacheable block reads
in the Bonnie benchmark. The more aggressive use of the dcache also seems
    to improve metadata operational performance.

  • Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
    infrastructure for it.

    Let it rip!
