Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if

Each processor holds a GDT in its per-cpu structure. The sgdt
instruction gives the base address of the current GDT. This address can
be used to bypass KASLR memory randomization. With another bug, an
attacker could target other per-cpu structures or deduce the base of
the main memory section (PAGE_OFFSET).This patch relocates the GDT table for each processor inside the
fixmap section. The space is reserved based on number of supported
processors.For consistency, the remapping is done by default on 32 and 64-bit.
Each processor switches to its remapped GDT at the end of
initialization. For hibernation, the main processor returns with the
original GDT and switches back to the remapping at completion.This patch was tested on both architectures. Hibernation and KVM were
both tested specially for their usage of the GDT.Thanks to Boris Ostrovsky for testing and

The Kconfig currently controlling compilation of this code is:
config PNPBIOS
bool "Plug and Play BIOS support"...meaning that it currently is not being built as a module by anyone.
Lets remove the couple traces of modularity, so that when reading the
driver there is no doubt it is builtin-only.Since module_init translates to device_initcall in the non-modular

The PNPBIOS driver requires preprocessor defines (located in
include/asm/segment.h) only declared if the architecture is set to
X86_32. If the architecture is set to X86_64, the PNPBIOS driver will
not build properly. The X86 dependecy for the PNPBIOS configuration
option is changed to an explicit X86_32 dependency in order to prevent

Since we are removing paravirt_enabled() replace it with a
logical equivalent. Even though PNPBIOS is x86 specific we
add an arch-specific type call, which can be implemented by
any architecture to show how other legacy attribute devices
can later be also checked for with other ACPI legacy attribute
flags.This implicates the first ACPI 5.2.9.3 IA-PC Boot Architecture
ACPI_FADT_LEGACY_DEVICES flag device, and shows how to add more.The reason pnpbios gets a defined structure and as such uses
a different approach than the RTC legacy quirk is that ACPI
has a respective RTC flag, while pnpbios does not. We fold
the pnpbios quirk under ACPI_FADT_LEGACY_DEVICES ACPI flag
use case, and use a struct of possible devices to enable
future extensions of this.As per 0-day, this bumps the vmlinux size using i386-tinyconfig as
follows:TOTAL TEXT init.text x86_early_init_platform_quirks()
+32 +28 +28 +28That's 4 byte overhead total, the rest is cleared out on init
as its all __init text.v2: split out subarch handlng on switch to make it easier
later to add other subarchs. The 'fall-through' switch

A small number of systems respond to PnP dock queries with bogus values.
This causes us to keep logging an error every 2 seconds. Instead of trying
again just assume the BIOS is crapware and doesn't actually have dock

The only part of proc_dir_entry the code outside of fs/proc
really cares about is PDE(inode)->data. Provide a helper
for that; static inline for now, eventually will be moved
to fs/proc, along with the knowledge of struct proc_dir_entry

This is cleanup mostly, nothing urgent.
I came up with it when looking at dynamic debug which can
enable pr_debug messages at runtime or boot param
for a specific module.Advantages:
- Any pnp code can make use of the moduleparam.h interface, the modules
will show up as pnp.param.
- Passing pnp.ddebug as kernel boot param will enable all pnp debug messages

percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py
The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.

headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of

Convert code away from ->read_proc/->write_proc interfaces. Switch to
proc_create()/proc_create_data() which make addition of proc entries

GDT_ENTRY_INIT is static initializer of desc_struct.
We already have similar macro GDT_ENTRY() but it's static

Rename set_base()/set_limit to set_desc_base()/set_desc_limit()
and rewrite them in C. These are naturally introduced by the
idea of get_desc_base()/get_desc_limit().The conversion actually found the bug in apm_32.c:
bad_bios_desc is written at run-time, but it is defined const
