Bash 4 filters out variables which contain a dot in them.
This happends to be the case of CPPFLAGS_vmlinux.lds.
This is rather unfortunate, as it now causes
build failures when using SHELL=/bin/bash to compile,
or when bash happens to be used by make (eg when it's /bin/sh)Remove the common definition of CPPFLAGS_vmlinux.lds by
pushing relevant stuff to either Makefile.build or the
arch specific kernel/Makefile where we build the linker script.This is also nice cleanup as we move the information out where
it is used.Notes for the different architectures touched:
arm - we use an already exported symbol
cris - we use a config symbol aleady available

mips - the jiffies complexity has moved to vmlinux.lds.S where we need it.

Discarded sections in different archs share some commonality but have
considerable differences. This led to linker script for each arch
implementing its own /DISCARD/ definition, which makes maintaining
tedious and adding new entries error-prone.This patch makes all linker scripts to move discard definitions to the
end of the linker script and use the common DISCARDS macro. As ld
uses the first matching section definition, archs can include default
discarded sections by including them earlier in the linker script.ia64 is notable because it first throws away some ia64 specific
subsections and then include the rest of the sections into the final
image, so those sections must be discarded before the inclusion.defconfig compile tested for x86, x86-64, powerpc, powerpc64, ia64,

Commit 5fd29d6ccbc98884569d6f3105aeca70858b3e0f ("printk: clean up
handling of log-levels and newlines") changed printk semantics. printk
lines with multiple KERN_ prefixes are no longer emitted as
before the patch.is now included in the output on each additional use.
Remove all uses of multiple KERN_s in formats.

x86 throws away .discard section but no other archs do. Also,
.discard is not thrown away while linking modules. Make every arch
and module linking throw it away. This will be used to define dummy
variables for percpu declarations and definitions.This patch is based on Ivan Kokshaysky's alpha percpu patch.

This allows the callers to now pass down the full set of FAULT_FLAG_xyz
flags to handle_mm_fault(). All callers have been (mechanically)
converted to the new calling convention, there's almost certainly room
for architectures to clean up their code and then add FAULT_FLAG_RETRY

The defines and typedefs (hw_interrupt_type, no_irq_type, irq_desc_t) have
been kept around for migration reasons. After more than two years it's
time to remove them finally.This patch cleans up one of the remaining users. When all such patches
hit mainline we can remove the defines and typedefs finally.Impact: cleanup
Convert the last remaining users to struct irq_chip and remove the

One strange place is some OMAP driver (drivers/video/omap/) which
won't build modular, but it's already wants get_vm_area() export.

It is currently impossible to run a user-mode linux machine inside another
user-mode linux (UML on UML). It breaks after a few instructions. When
it tries to check whether SYSEMU is installed (the inner) UML receives an
inconsistent result (from the outer UML).This is the output of a broken attempt:

$The problem is the following:
PTRACE_SYSCALL/SINGLESTEP is currently managed inside arch_ptrace for ARCH=um.
PTRACE_SYSEMU/SUSEMU_SINGLESTEP is not captured in arch_ptrace's switch,
therefore it is erroneously passed back to ptrace_request (in
kernel/ptrace).This simple patch simply forces ptrace to return an error on
PTRACE_SYSEMU/SUSEMU_SINGLESTEP as it is unsupported on ARCH=um, and fixes

Rather than have the pagefault handler kill a process directly if it gets
a VM_FAULT_OOM, have it call into the OOM killer.With increasingly sophisticated oom behaviour (cpusets, memory cgroups,
oom killing throttling, oom priority adjustment or selective disabling,
panic on oom, etc), it's silly to unconditionally kill the faulting
process at page fault time. Create a hook for pagefault oom path to call
into instead.Only converted x86 and uml so far.

Each SMP arch defines these themselves. Move them to a central
location.Twists:
1) Some archs (m32, parisc, s390) set possible_map to all 1, so we add a
CONFIG_INIT_ALL_POSSIBLE for this rather than break them.2) mips and sparc32 '#define cpu_possible_map phys_cpu_present_map'.
Those archs simply have phys_cpu_present_map replaced everywhere.3) Alpha defined cpu_possible_map to cpu_present_map; this is tricky
so I just manipulate them both in sync.4) IA64, cris and m32r have gratuitous 'extern cpumask_t cpu_possible_map'

is that the former contains externs for two long-dead functions.

Right now, there is no notifier that is called on a new cpu, before the new
cpu begins processing interrupts/softirqs.
Various kernel function would need that notification, e.g. kvm works around
by calling smp_call_function_single(), rcu polls cpu_online_map.The patch adds a CPU_STARTING notification. It also adds a helper function
that sends the message to all cpu_chain handlers.Tested on x86-64.
All other archs are untested. Especially on sparc, I'm not sure if I got

Jack Ren and Eric Miao tracked down the following long standing
problem in the NOHZ code:scheduler switch to idle task
enable interruptsWindow starts here
----> interrupt happens (does not set NEED_RESCHED)
irq_exit() stops the tick----> interrupt happens (does set NEED_RESCHED)
return from schedule()
cpu_idle(): preempt_disable();
Window ends here
The interrupts can happen at any point inside the race window. The
first interrupt stops the tick, the second one causes the scheduler to
rerun and switch away from idle again and we end up with the tick
disabled.The fact that it needs two interrupts where the first one does not set
NEED_RESCHED and the second one does made the bug obscure and extremly
hard to reproduce and analyse. Kudos to Jack and Eric.Solution: Limit the NOHZ functionality to the idle loop to make sure
that we can not run into such a situation ever again.cpu_idle()
