  • Wrap access to task credentials so that they can be separated more easily from
    the task_struct during the introduction of COW creds.

    Change most current->(|e|s|fs)[ug]id to current_(|e|s|fs)[ug]id().

    Change some task->e?[ug]id to task_e?[ug]id(). In some places it makes more
    sense to use RCU directly rather than a convenient wrapper; these will be
    addressed by later patches.

  • Christoph Lameter pointed out that ram disk pages also clutter the LRU
    lists. When vmscan finds them dirty and tries to clean them, the ram disk
    writeback function just redirties the page so that it goes back onto the
    active list. Round and round she goes...

    With the ram disk driver [rd.c] replaced by the newer 'brd.c', this is no
    longer the case, as ram disk pages are no longer maintained on the lru.
    [This makes them unmigratable for defrag or memory hot remove, but that
    can be addressed by a separate patch series.] However, the ramfs pages
    behave like ram disk pages used to, so:

    Define new address_space flag [shares address_space flags member with
    mapping's gfp mask] to indicate that the address space contains all
    unevictable pages. This will provide for efficient testing of ramfs pages
    in page_evictable().

    Also provide wrapper functions to set/test the unevictable state to
    minimize #ifdefs in ramfs driver and any other users of this facility.

    Set the unevictable state on address_space structures for new ramfs
    inodes. Test the unevictable state in page_evictable() to cull
    unevictable pages.

    These changes depend on [CONFIG_]UNEVICTABLE_LRU.

  • Split the LRU lists in two, one set for pages that are backed by real file
    systems ("file") and one for pages that are backed by memory and swap
    ("anon"). The latter includes tmpfs.

    The advantage of doing this is that the VM will not have to scan over lots
    of anonymous pages (which we generally do not want to swap out), just to
    find the page cache pages that it should evict.

    This patch has the infrastructure and a basic policy to balance how much
    we scan the anon lists and how much we scan the file lists. The big
    policy changes are in separate patches.

  • The previous patch db203d53d474aa068984e409d807628f5841da1b ("mm:
    tiny-shmem fix lock ordering: mmap_sem vs i_mutex") to fix the lock
    ordering in tiny-shmem breaks shared anonymous and IPC memory on NOMMU
    architectures because it was using the expanding truncate to signal ramfs
    to allocate a physically contiguous RAM backing the inode (otherwise it is
    unusable for "memory mapping" it to userspace).

    However do_truncate is what caused the lock ordering error, due to it
    taking i_mutex. In this case, we can actually just call ramfs directly to
    allocate memory for the mapping, rather than go via truncate.

  • Add a new BDI capability flag: BDI_CAP_NO_ACCT_WB. If this flag is
    set, then don't update the per-bdi writeback stats from
    test_set_page_writeback() and test_clear_page_writeback().

    Misc cleanups:

    - convert bdi_cap_writeback_dirty() and friends to static inline functions
    - create a flag that includes all three dirty/writeback related flags,
    since almst all users will want to have them toghether

  • Since CONFIG_RAMFS is currently hard-selected to "y", and since
    Documentation/filesystems/ramfs-rootfs-initramfs.txt reads as follows:

    "The amount of code required to implement ramfs is tiny, because all the
    work is done by the existing Linux caching infrastructure. Basically,
    you're mounting the disk cache as a filesystem. Because of this, ramfs is
    not an optional component removable via menuconfig, since there would be
    negligible space savings."

    It seems pointless to leave this as a Kconfig entry.

  • It is often known at allocation time whether a page may be migrated or not.
    This patch adds a flag called __GFP_MOVABLE and a new mask called
    GFP_HIGH_MOVABLE. Allocations using the __GFP_MOVABLE can be either migrated
    using the page migration mechanism or reclaimed by syncing with backing
    storage and discarding.

    An API function very similar to alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() is added for
    __GFP_MOVABLE allocations called alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable(). The
    flags used by alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() are not changed because it would
    change the semantics of an existing API. After this patch is applied there
    are no in-kernel users of alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() so it probably should
    be marked deprecated if this patch is merged.

    Note that this patch includes a minor cleanup to the use of __GFP_ZERO in
    shmem.c to keep all flag modifications to inode->mapping in the
    shmem_dir_alloc() helper function. This clean-up suggestion is courtesy of
    Hugh Dickens.

    Additional credit goes to Christoph Lameter and Linus Torvalds for shaping the
    concept. Credit to Hugh Dickens for catching issues with shmem swap vector
    and ramfs allocations.

  • This bug was caught by LTP testcase fchmod06 on Blackfin platform.

    In the manpage of fchmod, "EPERM: The effective UID does not match the
    owner of the file, and the process is not privileged (Linux: it does not
    have the CAP_FOWNER capability)."

    But the ramfs nommu code missed the inode_change_ok POSIX UID/GID
    verification. This patch fixed this.

  • First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline
    function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock()
    mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why.

    This patch
    a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h
    b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c
    c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation
    d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly.
    e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were
    getting them indirectly

    Net result is:
    a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if
    they don't need sched.h
    b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files:
    on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files,
    after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%).

  • Many struct inode_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const
    moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential
    dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to
    these shared resources.

  • This patch cleans up generic_file_*_read/write() interfaces. Christoph
    Hellwig gave me the idea for this clean ups.

    In a nutshell, all filesystems should set .aio_read/.aio_write methods and use
    do_sync_read/ do_sync_write() as their .read/.write methods. This allows us
    to cleanup all variants of generic_file_* routines.

    Final available interfaces:

    generic_file_aio_read() - read handler
    generic_file_aio_write() - write handler
    generic_file_aio_write_nolock() - no lock write handler

    __generic_file_aio_write_nolock() - internal worker routine

  • This eliminates the i_blksize field from struct inode. Filesystems that want
    to provide a per-inode st_blksize can do so by providing their own getattr
    routine instead of using the generic_fillattr() function.

    Note that some filesystems were providing pretty much random (and incorrect)
    values for i_blksize.

  • Fix execution through the FDPIC binfmt of programs stored on ramfs by
    preventing the ramfs mmap() returning successfully on a private mapping of
    a ramfs file. This causes NOMMU mmap to make a copy of the mapped portion
    of the file and map that instead.

    This could be improved by granting direct mapping access to read-only
    private mappings for which the data is stored on a contiguous run of pages.
    However, this is only likely to be the case if the file was extended with
    truncate before being written.

    ramfs is left to map the file directly for shared mappings so that SYSV IPC
    and POSIX shared memory both still work.

  • Extend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that
    permits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint.

    The filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry
    pointers. For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt()
    which will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the
    superblock's s_root (as per the old default behaviour).

    The get_sb() op now returns an integer as there's now no need to return the
    superblock pointer.

    This patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount
    points, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing. In
    such a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root
    and mnt_sb would be set directly.

    The patch also makes the following changes:

    (*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount
    pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change
    very little.

    (*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should
    normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will
    always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb().

    (*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the
    dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon().

    This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that
    aren't actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. The
    currently called functions assume that the whole tree is rooted at s_root,
    and that anonymous dentries are not the roots of trees which results in
    dentries being left unculled.

    However, with the way NFS superblock sharing are currently set to be
    implemented, these assumptions are violated: the root of the filesystem is
    simply a dummy dentry and inode (the real inode for '/' may well be
    inaccessible), and all the vfsmounts are rooted on anonymous[*] dentries
    with child trees.

    [*] Anonymous until discovered from another tree.

    (*) The documentation has been adjusted, including the additional bit of
    changing ext2_* into foo_* in the documentation.

  • This is a conversion to make the various file_operations structs in fs/
    const. Basically a regexp job, with a few manual fixups

    The goal is both to increase correctness (harder to accidentally write to
    shared datastructures) and reducing the false sharing of cachelines with
    things that get dirty in .data (while .rodata is nicely read only and thus
    cache clean)

  • Now that compound page handling is properly fixed in the VM, move nommu
    over to using compound pages rather than rolling their own refcounting.

    nommu vm page refcounting is broken anyway, but there is no need to have
    divergent code in the core VM now, nor when it gets fixed.

  • ramfs neglects to update the directory mtime and ctime fields when creating
    a new symbolic link. Ramfs was modified in 2.6.15 to update these fields
    when other types of entries are created. The symlink support is separate
    from that other support, so that change did not cover quite all of the
    possibilities.

    All of the directory content manipulation entry points now seem to be
    covered with respect to these time field updates.

  • The attached patch makes ramfs support shared-writable mmaps by:

    (1) Attempting to perform a contiguous block allocation to the requested size
    when truncate attempts to increase the file from zero size, such as
    happens when:

    fd = shm_open("/file/on/ramfs", ...):
    ftruncate(fd, size_requested);
    addr = mmap(NULL, subsize, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE|PROT_EXEC, MAP_SHARED,
    fd, offset);

    (2) Permitting any shared-writable mapping over any contiguous set of extant
    pages. get_unmapped_area() will return the address into the actual ramfs
    pages. The mapping may start anywhere and be of any size, but may not go
    over the end of file. Multiple mappings may overlap in any way.

    (3) Not permitting a file to be shrunk if it would truncate any shared
    mappings (private mappings are copied).

    Thus this patch provides support for POSIX shared memory on NOMMU kernels,
    with certain limitations such as there being a large enough block of pages
    available to support the allocation and it only working on directly mappable
    filesystems.

  • Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
    even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
    archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
    3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
    git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
    infrastructure for it.
